MVD Panel Assessment

PT INDONESIA CHEMICAL ALUMINA | Tayan, Kalimantan Barat

2022

Project Overview

In Oct 2022, PT Elbema Integra Indonesia carried out a comprehensive condition assessment of Medium Voltage Drive (MVD) panels at PT Indonesia Chemical Alumina, utilizing three primary diagnostic methods: PD Scan (Partial Discharge Detection), Thermal Visual Inspection, and Transition Earth Voltage (TEV) Monitoring.

The PD Scan was conducted to detect internal insulation breakdown or partial discharge activity within the MVD panels. This technique enables early identification of insulation degradation that may not be visible but poses a significant risk of future failure.

The Thermal Visual Inspection was performed using infrared thermography to identify abnormal temperature variations, such as hotspots on electrical connections, busbars, and current-carrying components. These thermal anomalies may indicate loose connections or high-resistance points prone to overheating and failure.

Meanwhile, Transition Earth Voltage (TEV) Monitoring was utilized to measure abnormal voltage transients on the earthing system, which often indicate partial discharges occurring within enclosed switchgear systems. TEV is a non-invasive, effective method for detecting internal insulation stress without dismantling equipment.

Together, the results from these three methods provided a comprehensive overview of the health and operational reliability of the MVD panel system. The technical findings were compiled into a structured report to support preventive action planning, early intervention, and data-driven maintenance strategies.
